When the British form expat communities abroad such as Dordogne do they export the social problems such as?

public drunkenness, and thuggery, like in Southern Spain, which ties up police and ambulance resources, and disturbs the locals, or are they well behaved?

Public Comments

  1. Oh very well behaved, The French police don't mess about .
  2. not all expat communities are the same, spain has those problems because it is a holiday destination frequented predominantly by teenagers, it is not a ideal destination for adults with young children, whereas if you visited south of france or florida with a growing british population you would not see this behaviour
  3. Expat communities in France usually consist of mature adults, and when they have children, they control them even if they are teenagers. They are a national minority that does not wish to attract attention to themselves for unruly behaviour and they do not hang about semi-naked or congregate on their own doorstep getting drunk, puking all over the place, or making love on the pavement. Many are actually middle-aged or retired. So yes, they are extremely well behaved. Most affrays caused in Spain are caused by people who are there on holiday, and not long term residents. France is more expensive than Spain so attracts a more restrained kind of tourist. In any case, teenagers cannot buy or be sold alcohol if they are under 18. Even the "booze" cruisers who went to Boulogne, Calais and Dunkerque for the day are very restrained nowadays and no longer punch the waiters in the face. They drive over, do their shopping, have a meal and go home to drink their purchases in the comfort of their own home. It is zero tolerance when driving, so they do not risk it as they are easily identifiable by their number plates.
  4. No, they don't export the social problems. They sometimes cheat the administration because they think that france is a place to get social help for free, but besides to that, it's ok. Most of them are mid aged or old people. They are creating a new social problem : they don't bargain and now, the housing prices and the local food price increased so much... I'm from the middle class and would like to live in dordogne area, but it's too expensive for me.
  5. As an attorney would say, is that a question? No, they do not export social problems. They lounge around their front lawns and play croquet. Except on Sundays, when they play polo.
